Epiphany
Johnson Shut-Ins State Park, Missouri
On the left side you will see Robison's original 4x5 film transparency for his image "Epiphany". You will notice that the text on the film is reversed. Robison intentionally printed this transparency in reverse to balance the composition. If you take a look through the 4x5 camera on the tripod behind you, you will see that everything is upside down. Photographing with a large format camera forces the image creator to approach compositions from an abstract viewpoint. To the right of the color transparency you will also see the black and white "unsharp mask" Robison created to control contrast in the printing process. Cibachrome printing material is inherently contrasty. Robison would create a low density, slightly out of focus negative of the transparency and then both of these pieces of film would be sandwhiched together in the enlarger. The black and white negative would block some of the light from passing through the delicate highlights and would, at the same time, allow the shadows of the image more time to be exposed, thus reducing the contrast of the printed image overall.

"The Nature Of Photography - From Traditional To Augmented Reality" chronicles Edward C. Robison III's 25+ year photographic and artistic journey during a time of revolution in the world of photography. The exhibition illustrates how technology can influence art and even drive the artistic process. Once resolved to never switch to digital photography, Edward is now using the medium to create new and cutting edge works that go far beyond the traditional fine-art photographic print. Edward has fused traditional landscape photography with new media work which incorporates elements of Video, 3D Modeling, Augmented and Virtual Realities.

Edward C. Robison III has had a lifelong passion for nature. After picking up a camera at a young age he has focused his lens on creating intimate portraits of the natural landscape. From stark boulder fields to lush waterfalls, Edward’s photographs reflect his deep love of nature,
as well as an underlying theme of conservation of natural resources. The places he photographs are the quiet, the remote, the mystical, the majestic… the sacred places of earth.
Edward was born and raised in Warrensburg, Missouri. While attending High School he focused on drawing and painting. After attending his first photography class Edward decided to pursue a degree in photography at the Kansas City Art Institute. While spending a summer internship with Southwestern landcape photographer, Michael Fatali, Edward found that his true passion was photographing the natural world. After graduating Edward and his wife Janalee moved to Colorado. While traveling back and forth to visit family and friends in Kansas, Edward realized his true calling was to photograph the subtle beauty and simplicity of the Midwest landscape.
Edward’s work can be found in many corporate and private collections
including BKD, Capital One, and the National Arbor Day Foundation.
His work is also featured in the Sierra Club Calendars and
ten books about the Midwest landscape.
When Edward is not out capturing images
of the Ozark Wilderness he can be found photographing
world class artworks for Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art,
and creating one of a kind images for Johnny Morris and Bass Pro Shops.

Long House Ruins
Bandelier National Monument, New Mexico
Using an ultra-wide angle lens, Robison captured approximately 1,000 photos to create the 3D photogrammetry model of "Long House Ruins." He captured both the interiors and the exteriors of the ruins. Robison has been experimenting with creating virual reality experiences of some of the locations he has captured in 3D. Long House Ruins would make for an excellent virtual reality experience which would allow people who are unable to climb ladders the ability to virtually explore inside the ruins.

In Slow Motion

Corona At Elephant Rocks
Elephant Rocks State Park, Missouri
During the total solar eclipse over Elephant Rocks State Park, Missouri, on August 21, 2017, Robison used two cameras set up next to each other to capture a time-lapse video of this rare celestial event. One camera was fitted with a solar filter and exposed for the changes in the sun's exposure. The second camera captured the changing light on the landscape. The images created by the two cameras were combined in post production.

Although the printed version of "Misty Mountains" was captured with 3 stitched high resolution images, Robison used an iphone to capture the Augmented Reality time-lapse video. Using an iphone to capture time-lapse videos allows Robison to focus his main camera on creating new artistic images while leaving the iphone to record the passage of time.

Event Horizon

Much like the image "Sky Fire," Robison saw an opportunity in the cloud gap at the horizon and quickly set out to find a suitable location for a time-lapse. Luckily, this amazing view is less than a mile from his home. Robison set up his camera to create an exposure every five seconds and covered his camera to protect it from the imminent rain. This print is a blending of one of the first frames in the time-lapse (the foreground), and one of the last frames (the lightning and red sky)

Moonrise At Teter Rock
Greenwood County, Kansas
Advancements in digital camera sensors and noise reduction technologies have brought about a whole new era of night photography. Night photography has always been possible, even with film utilizing long exposure times, but to capture star points and the milky way (instead of the star lines that longer exposures created), an unbelievable iso of 16,000 was used to capture this image. (The typical iso used in film photography was between iso 100-1600. Anything above 1600 would have yielded a grainy mess that did not have the resolution to resolve star points.)

Jasmine Falls

To give the interactive content of "Jasmine Falls" a dynamic look, Robison built a homemade camera rig. The rig consisted of two parallel pipes, a motorized shuttle, and a computerized camera control module. The time-lapse rig was then spanned between two tripods approximately four feet apart. The camera was mounted to the shuttle and programmed to move in increments across the rails capturing an exposure every few seconds as it went.

Robison has been experimenting with multiple concepts to make static time-lapses appear more 3-dimensional when viewed with an Augmented Reality app. To create this interactive content, Robison masked out the foreground rocks from the background timelapse video and separated them by a few millimeters in virtual 3D space. This creates a parallax effect which gives the viewer the illusion of a 3D video.

Elephant's Journey
Elephant Rocks State Park, Missouri
Robison again used the technique of photogrammetry to capture a 3D model of the Elephant Rocks. To create a 3D model, hundreds, in this case thousands, of photographs are captured of almost every possible angle of an object or scene and then special software matches up features within the images. Once the features are matched up the software creates a virtual mesh using triangulation to plot points in a 3 dimensional space. After the mesh is plotted and a 3D model is built, high resolution textures extracted from the photographs are overlaid upon the 3D model to create a final fully textured ultra-high resolution model. Because smartphones and tablets have limited processing power, the models then have to be scaled down to something the device can handle. It's not uncommon for a mesh to start with 100 million or more vertices which then get scaled down to less than 100,000 vertices. Robison used images created from a drone as well as images captured on the ground to create this 3D model of the entire rock face with all of the Elephant Rock boulders setting on top of it.

Spring Sunrise On The White River

Robison set his camera up to capture an image every 10 seconds for approximately one hour to create this interactive 15 second time-lapse video. Much like the old days of exposing a single sheet of large-format film, time-lapse photography takes a lot of patience and time. Choosing an interesting composition and predicting where the light will be best in an hour requires a lot of concentration. Often, the light shifts unexpectedly to reveal a more interesting subject behind him.

Glory Hole

This image of the "Glory Hole" was captured on 4x5 film in 1998. When Robison began experimenting with Augmented Reality, he knew he wanted to create an interactive experience of this unique geological feature. For Robison's first Augmented Reality book titled "Ozark Landscapes," Robison revisited the Glory Hole 16 years later at approximately the same month and time of the day in an attempt to capture the rainbow that forms in the waterfall during a sunny winter day. He was successful, and at that time, he recorded a video of the falls flowing that would then come to life when the photographic print was viewed with a smartphone or tablet. As Robison's skills and experience at building Augmented Reality applications increased and technology advanced, he decided to revisit the Glory Hole once more. This time, he used a technique called photogrammetry to create a 3D model of the falls and the entire bluff overhang to create the fully 3D immersive Augmented Reality experience you can view here.

Steele Creek Roots

Steele Creek along the Buffalo National River is a favorite photographic location not only for Robison but also for many other artists. But familiarity sometimes makes creating a unique composition difficult. Night photography opens up an entirely new world of photographic opportunities. This image was created using the light painting technique. Look closely: you can see Robison's form as a pillar of light.

Drifting
Rocktown - Wilson Lake, Kansas
Rocktown is one of the many unusual places Robison discovered on his journey to unearth the hidden treasures of the midwest, an area many consider flat and boring. On this outing, the weather was unforgiving with high winds and below freezing temperatures. Due to the mechanical shutters built into the lenses of large-format cameras, sub-zero temperatures can cause the shutters to slow down or completely stop working. Robison compensated by setting the shutter at 1/200th of a second to get an actual exposure time of 1 second.

Inspiration Point Vista

This image was captured using a "Gigapan" robotic camera mount. It is composed of 162 individual 22 megapixel images stitched together to create a 500 Megapixel (1/2 Gigapixel) ultra-high resolution image. Although the image quality is incredible, much like the 4x5 camera, the equipment is large and bulky, and set-up and capture times are very slow. After the debut of 40+ megapixel digial SLR cameras, Robison realized that he could carry a much smaller set-up that consisted of just a camera and a special tilt/shift lens to capture and stitch just 3 images to achieve 120+ Megapixel images that rivaled the cumbersome Gigapan set-up.

Ignition
Chase County, Kansas
Historically, prairie fires were caused by lightning and would burn across vast stretches for many days. Today, prairies are managed and maintained by prescribed burns, which are now a crucial component of the prairie ecosystem.
During a prescribed burn, non-native invasive plants are burned out, allowing native plants more nutrients and room to grow. Prairie plants can survive fires since they have deep roots. Ten years ago, Robison gave his first prairie fire photography workshop in the Kansas Flint Hills to help photographers learn low light and fire photography techniques. Agritourism events based around the burning of the prairie have become a major attraction for tourists wanting to experience this exciting event. The rise in popularity has actually created an environmental issue with too many ranches burning to much of the prairie in a single season. This year will be the first year Robison will be giving a spring photography workshop on the prairie without any opportunities to photograph the burns.

Myst

This image was captured in Robison's backyard and continues his "One Square Mile" project, relocated to his new home in Arkansas. It was created using a special tilt/shift lens that allows the photographer to shift the lens right, left, and center to capture 3 images that can be stitched together digitally to create a resolution with nearly 3 times that of the camera used to capture the scene. "Myst" is one of Robison's first landscape images using this technique; if you look closely, you can make out some of the imperfect stitch lines in the tree bark.

The Flow
King's River, Arkansas
This image was created during Robison's first canoe trip in Arkansas along the King's River. Robison used a low camera angle and a slower exposure to convey that feeling of floating down the river in a canoe. After creating the image and heading back out on the river, his canoe hit the bluff. He, his friend and all their gear landed in the river. Luckily, he had carefully packed his camera in a watertight case!

Bender 4x5 Camera & Star D tripod
Bender Photographic was a maker of view camera kits from 1978-2008. Bender Photographic's proprietor Jay Bender, from Eureka Springs, Arkansas, has retired from building view camera kits after 30 years, due to declining use of film cameras. Edward used a 4x5 camera similar to this one to create many of the images in this room. The image projected on the back of the camera is an upside down and backwards view of the world.

Epiphany

In 2003, after much deliberation, Robison decided to switch from the darkroom color Cibachrome printing process to digital inkjet printing. As he began to scan his large format negatives, he saw an opportunity to rework those images with new and more refined tools offered by the digital darkroom. Compare the artist's original Cibachrome Print (to the right), and the "digital" inkjet version (to the left). -“The negative is the equivalent of the composer’s score, and the print the performance.” – Ansel Adams

Contemplation

Large-format photography is a slow process. It takes 20-30 minutes to set up the camera, read the light, and make a single exposure. To create "Contemplation," Robison spent four hours meditating and studying the stream and the moss-covered landscape before him. Afterwards, he exposed 3 sheets of film with diffferent compositions. This composition best portrays the essence of the location and his inner connection to it.

Due to the high cost of large-format color photography and the time involved in setting up the camera to capture even one image, Robison would often visit a location and never set up his camera. This had been one of those days, but just as he was leaving, the wind picked up and he felt as if a voice called him to come back and look more closely.

Heavily influenced by ancient Chinese and Japanese scroll work, Robison created custom dark slide masks in various formats to aid in composing narrow panoramic compositions completely in camera.

Ephraim's Ensō
Mount Ephraim, Kansas
In 1998, Robison attended an artist lecture series during which a monk painted an ensō. In Zen, ensō (円相 , "circle") is a circle that is hand-drawn in one or two uninhibited brushstrokes to express a moment when the mind is free to let the body create. The slow, meditative process of creating a large-format long exposure photograph came to be his ensō experience.

Autumn Forest
Briedenthal Preserve, Kansas
After moving back to Kansas from Colorado, Robison became obsessed with seeking out the hidden natural treasures of the midwest. The Briedenthal Preserve became one of his favorite places in Kansas to photograph. Ultimately, he and his family moved to a small farmhouse at the edge of the preserve (also known as The Baldwin Woods). An Abraham Maslow quote drove the next body of his work: “The great lesson is that the sacred is in the ordinary, that it is to be found in one's daily life, in one's neighbors, friends, and family, in one's backyard.” Robison spent the next few years intensely exploring and photographing the preserve to create a project entitled "One Square Mile." His photographs of the preserve helped to initiate the expansion of the Baldwin Woods Forest Preserve, which has recently been designated a National Natural Landmark and now protects over 500 acres from delopment.

Sky Fire

"Sky Fire" was made after an unusually violent Kansas winter storm that included hail and lightning. An hour before sunset, after the worst of the storm had passed, Robison stepped outside his farmhouse on the edge of the Baldwin Woods where he spotted a small clearing on the horizon. He knew if the sun shone through that clearing the entire sky would fill with color. He set up his camera and waited. As if on cue, the sun lit the belly of the clouds with color shifting from blues to vibrant reds and yellows to deep purples. To capture a wide panoramic expanse of sky, Robison panned his digital camera and captured 12 vertical images that he would later combine using a digital "stitching" technique into a single image.

The Quiraing
Isle of Skye, Scotland
Robison has several locations outside the United States on his photographic bucket list, but the Isle of Skye was number one. An unexpected photography job came up in Ireland, so after the job he and his family went to Scotland. They crossed the rugged Quiraing on the Isle of Skye just before sunset on the way to visit Fairy Glen. The landscape was ancient and magical, and on their short visit he found it difficult to capture the intensity and grandeur of the Quiraing.

"Light painting" is a technique in which the photographer places the camera on a tripod and then opens the shutter of the camera for several minutes. During that time, the photographic artist "paints" the scene with light using various light sources including headlamps and flashlights. Robison began his artistic journey as a painter, so for him "light painting" is a natural combination of artistic disciplines.

Stack Rock Sunrise

Robison would have rarely, if ever, pointed his large-format film camera directly into a sunrise or sunset. The dynamic range of a scene of this type would have been to wide to for a good exposure on film. Either the sky would have been exposed properly, with a silhouette of the landscape, or a proper exposure of the landscape would have yeilded a completely white and featureless sky. Using a digital camera In this panoramic scene of Stack Rock, Robison took separate images for both the sky and landscape. He then seamlessly merged the multiple exposures to create an image with a correct exposure of both sky and foreground.

Swirling Foam

Inspired by the success of his earlier image, "Ephraim's Ensō," Robison was always keeping an eye out for slow-moving pools of water with interesting foam patterns spinning on the surface. To capture this extra-long exposure, Robison stopped down the aperture on his 4x5 lens to f/64, and opened the shutter for 10 minutes.

Green Rock

The color in this photograph is real and un-edited. During Robison's first photography show in college, in which every image was painstakingly printed in the darkroom from large-format color film using the Cibachrome printing process, he recalls overhearing several groups of people dismissing his work as "fake," "photoshopped" or "digital." Digital photography was just becoming a trend, and most of it was heavily edited and oversaturated. People were either very excited and overzealous about the amazing editing potential of the digital process or were extremely against it. At the time, Robison could not see himself ever going digital.

Native Blessing
Lower Antelope Canyon, Arizona
During his apprenticeship with Fatali in the slot canyons of Arizona, Robison captured this image on 35mm color slide film. It wasn't until he received the film back from the lab several weeks later that he noticed the Native American face shape in the rock. At that time (1997), Upper and Lower Antelope canyons near Paige, Arizona, were mostly unknown to the public. Sometimes he spent an entire day in the canyons without seeing another human. When Robison returned to Lower Antelope Canyon in 2014, he and his family had to wait in a line for nearly two hours to go on a one-hour tour of the canyon with a group of about 20 people.

After graduating in 1999 from the Kansas City Art Institute, Robison and his wife, Janalee, moved to Colorado. He thought that Colorado, with its majestic mountains, would be the perfect place to build a nature photography career. But to his surprise, he found he was making more meaningful images on their travels back and fourth across Kansas to visit family. They moved back to Lawrence, Kansas, within a year. "Cottonwoods & Clouds" was created after driving through a heavy rain storm during one of those long Kansas road trips.

: a usually sudden manifestation or perception of the essential nature or meaning of something
: an intuitive grasp of reality through something (such as an event) usually simple and striking
: an illuminating discovery, realization, or disclosure. This is the first image Robison made with his 4x5 camera after returning to the midwest from a 3 month apprenticeship with Southwestern large-format landscape photographer Michael Fatali.

Holy Rollers
Gunnison, Colorado
Driving along Highway 50 in Southern Colorado just East of Gunnison, Robison could see only the very tops of the clouds peaking over the sagebrush covered hills to the South. He took the next dirt road that promised a better view and crested a hill. Towering thunderheads met the ground in rainfall, and made the nearest 15,000 foot mountains seem like tiny hills. He quickly set up his large format camera to capture the awe-inspiring moment on film. The vast contrast range in this image and the subtle details in the highlights of the cloud tops, required multiple darkroom "contrast masking" techniques to hold back the highlights in the printing process.

Ancient Spirit
Buffalo National River, Arkansas
A wind-swept cedar clinging to the edge of a sharp bluff overlooking the Buffalo River caught Robison's eye. To him, it embodied many of the ideals in ancient Chinese philosophy that continue to influenced his work.

Lost Trail
Lost Valley, Arkansas
A favorite subject for Robison, trails are a metaphor for the journey of life, as well as a means to acess and enjoy nature. Robison used a Widelux F8 camera to capture this image. The Widelux is a unique camera that utilizes a rotating lens and a 1mm slit at the film plane to expose a 140 degree ultra wide angle image onto a double wide 35mm strip of film.
